The festive season fast approaches the village Christmas tree has been collected and put up in front of the Calleva, lights switch-on and carols at an open air charity market on 2 December.

Santa made an early appearance on 1 December at the children’s party in the village hall

Remembrance Sunday at the War Memorial

Firework night, celebrated Saturday 10 November

Remembrance - Year 3 at the War Memorial with Royal British Legion members on Friday 9 November remembering the war dead of both Silchester and Pamber.

Yet another celebration, an 80th birthday gathering for Nancy on Sunday 4 November at which Marsden regaled us with many previously untold stories.

Sandi and the team said ‘farewell and thank you’ to Ros and Eddie at  the November village market - they are moving from the area and will be missed.

Halloween was celebrated in the Calleva with Keith winning the trophy for the largest pumpkin grown.  Bewitching bar staff and a range of ghoulish locals enjoyed the evening, rather quieter than usual, though.

Autumn colours have been better than for a few recent years, just a pity that we didn’t have much in the way of  nice blue skies to view them against!

21 October, One World Sunday provided an opportunity for pupils from Silchester School to tell and show some of the effects that developed countries are having on the third world.  Later that day the Bishop of Basingstoke came to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer; due to having lost his voice we were able to enjoy his wife telling something of the very interesting history from the Bishop’s notes!  Excellent cakes and ringing of church bells added to the occasion.

Group Sax made a welcome return with two concerts on 6 October.  After some Jungle Book highlights, ‘Peter and the Wolf’’ was the popular main piece for the afternoon family concert while the evening concert once again provided a wide repertoire.

Fun Run 2012 - 22 September, rather later this year but a great day for all involved!

At the beginning of the Autumn term, Silchester School was proud to host a visit by a young choir from Swaziland who performed a number of amazing song and dance routines ranging from the familiar to those that had their roots deeply embedded in Swazi-culture.

Beer Festival 2012 - 8 September, great beer accompanied by good music and a super supper.  Here’s looking forward to the next one!

Holiday Club - 27 youngsters had a great time with Olympic-themed ‘On Your Marks’, added visit to the dig, sports on the common and Silchester’s own Olympic Opening Ceremony!

Pirate night 21 July - a great evening with the now-traditional pirate charge across the common by the diggers, challenged by a good local turnout and a great party in the Calleva garden with music provided by ‘Men of Mexico’.

The Silchester MoodWall, a lottery funded Jubilee project was unveiled at the pavilion before the pirates took over the village on Saturday

And more Morris  - Fleet Morris and Hook Morris on 17 July.

More Morris, 2 July - after a wet day, the evening dried up for a visit by our regular friends the Kennet Morris, accompanied this time by Alton Morris.  The first members of the 2012 dig team had just arrived and were encouraged to join in!

Silchester Fete 2012 - the common again brought to a fever of activity - AND the weather was kind, given the sort of summer we’re having.  Thanks to Paul Scriven, Derek Morgan and Jan Hughes for the pictures as I was away working in Germany and missed the event.

The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr David Leeks, and his wife Amanda paid us a formal visit on 29 April, just before the end of his year in office, attending the morning service at St Mary’s.

Palm Sunday - Roman Soldiers, Alfie the donkey, Bishop Andrew Proud and glorious weather all contributed to a very successful Palm Sunday walk celebrating Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem and the start of Holy Week..
